Harmony in the Spanish soundtracks of the nineties

  • “In this global planisphere of feelings, of emotions, of thr memory, of the “sounds and fragrances swirl through the evening air”, Sergio's work invites us to open a new small door hidden in the mind of the creators of music”.

    Pascal Gaigne, Composer
    ,
  • «I think that it is a very serious, rigorous, exhaustive and interesting work that could be of interest to students of applied music composition».

    José Nieto, Compositor
    ,
  • “Speaking or writing film music in the language of musicians is not common in bibliography. And to do this without decontextualizing the music of its images, is even rarer. Sergio Lasuén creates a new path in that sense, with a fundamental work to help us understand, from within, the music of Spanish cinema of recent times” .

Josep Lluís i Falcó, Universidad de Barcelona
    ,
Using an original methodological proposal, Sergio Lasuén systematizes different types of harmonic resources which are recurrently associated with film excerpts sharing similar expressive goals.
Based on an approach applicable to different types of interdisciplinary works that arise as a result of what he calls the Global Creative Process and after explaining and revealing the scope of his proposal, he puts it into practice using an extensive sample of the Spanish cinema of the nineties, comprising 26 feature films, directed by 12 different directors and with soundtracks composed by 12 different composers.
In order to justify his conclusions, he refers to more than 200 scenes in which the reader can look in depth at his convenience.
This book is indispensable to any student drawn to interdisciplinary projects, as well as anyone interested in music analysis. It is also beneficial to performers as they will probably play in an interdisciplinary art work throughout their career.
Interestingly, despite that specific terminology is used, both soundtrack fans without musical training and professionals of the film world have expressed their interest in the conclusions of this book.
